The Mount Pleasant BIA is planning an end of summer community street festival wherein we will close Main Street from Broadway to 12th Avenue from noon to 6 pm on September 25th, 2010.
This will be a fun, family friendly event with live music, improv and comedy acts, a local merchant market, lots of activities for children, local artists and significant community group involvement. Science World, Vancouver Parks Board (unveiling of plans for the Mount Pleasant Park),City of Vancouver (Composting / Mount Pleasant Community Plan), Mount Pleasant Community Centre, BC Hydro are all on board. The festival celebrates the shift in seasons from summer to autumn, and the shifting attitudes in our community towards sustainability, responsible living and the increasing interest in all aspects of urban gardening.
September, of course, is the time when gardeners start to plan their fall bulb creations and are looking for that unique plant to add interest to their fading flower beds. We are looking to dedicate a portion of our footprint to have booths devoted to educating our urban gardeners and to cater to their fall planting urges.
We would love to have the Vancouver Dahlia Society be part of this event. Gardening is becoming a very prominent interest in our community, and as such it is a theme at the heart of the Autumn Shift Festival. We are offering a platform for groups and high quality suppliers (West Coast Seeds are participating) to share their ideas and engage the public in a fun, community oriented environment. We will have a sound system and stage available for any related lectures or demonstrations.
If you choose to sell any items, it is not our intention to charge any fee to participating vendors who exemplify our theme and we will be promoting the event. Given the popularity of our Summer Spaces street closures in 2009, we anticipate our local community will come out in support and that many from further afield will embrace the opportunity to come visit Main Street.
We would like to invite you to set up an information booth or, if you have any other ideas, something more interactive. So please consider what your organization might like to do, let us know, and we'll be glad to help out in any way we can. If you have any question or require more information you can contact us at the Mount Pleasant BIA office: 604.874.9816 or at mpbia@telus.net |
